Later on when asked the same question he says like 82, he's just giving people an outrageously stupid answer that so that he doesn't have to give a real lie (eg 22) and defend it.

The prostitute Yeah, I did find that weird. Not really sure what to make of it. I took what John Green said above that it just highlights how awful and lonely Holden is feeling that not even a prostitute wants to talk to him.
I think it also highlights a) his mood swings, constantly wanting to do something but deciding not to just as he's about to and b) his mixed feelings on love. There's a quote which kinda explains the prostitute situation a bit, I'll put it below with a page number though just in case you're not that far Argh, stupid computer deleted my answer off -.- I took it as: That he was just so down in that moment that he said yes that he lost all of his morals and just didn't care.
I think that he often thinks he is ready for things that hes not. Like he was talking about all the girls he's nearly done but stopped. He blames it on them saying stop but he probably would have anyway.
I also think that he has issues with voice his real opinion. I mean, he lies to her about having an opperation as to get out of it. He doesn;t feel comfortable juat saying no, which in my opinion shows us that he really is just a confused little boy.
THe thing that I find slighlty confusing about this book is the fact that it is in first person; in that he alters the story and plays up some parts, plays down others. I know that its demonstarighting his carachter and such but then I get confussed as to to what extent something actually happened

It's not too bad ...although there's a scene where he tries to hire a prostitute ...but it's not like graphic or anything.

is it a 'clean' book or like cherub or mental with violence ? By 1950s standards not at all, but by today's standards very much so.
