Currently going through Parliament, now with some ammendments.
Fairly sure most people on here are for it, but feel free to discuss.
One of the new amendments:
Teachers can opt-out of teaching about any same-sex marriage.
Personally, I don't really mind about the teaching amendment. But in the same breath, should children be taught that is doesn't exist?

It seems kind of silly to have an "opt-out" for teachers. They have to teach about other religions, they have to teach sex education (or is that optional - I was of the opinion it wasn't), ect. TBH I suppose it isn't that large a deal to have the opt-out since I don't think it's likely to have such a large impact, but it does seem silly anyway.

Yeah that amendment seems pretty stupid. xD
Personally, I'm for a complete separation of political policy and the ideologies. That means, I think the government should install a civil partnership that has all the political benefits and then marriage can be dealt with by religious institutions but in effect it's merely a blessing without any legal benefits. So if you just got married without getting a government civil partnership, legally, it would be meaningless.

This has been huge in the U.S. recently. Still more states where it's illegal, than legal, but I really believe it's just a matter of time. Like desegregation. It took a while for things to really happen. Same concept in my opinion, denying a group of people the same rights as others based on something about them. Eventually, it will be legal in all the states (i'm guessing). Hopefully in the 30 years, it will be taught in schools the was the Civil Rights movement in the 60s is now. Looking back at that, it makes me wonder if people who are against gay marriage realize that they are most likely going to be seen in the future the same way the racists in the 60s are.

Forgive me for being dense, but I'm really confused about the opt-out teaching amendment. If the legislation passes to guarantee same-sex marriage, why would anyone opt out of "teaching" about same-sex marriage? I mean, if same-sex marriage is legal, it's not as if you can pretend that it doesn't exist.

It's basically just a token trade-off for those who don't want same-sex marriage to happen. It sweetens the deal for them and still enables Parliament to pass the legislation.

I'm looking forward to the year (please let it be in my lifetime) when there is zero controversy about same sex relationships.
And I don't think teachers should be allowed to opt out. That segregates it from the rest of education. Are teachers allowed to opt out that the earth is round? No it's just round and thats pretty much the end of it. Kids don't realise there is anything different about 2 men loving each other or 2 women loving each other. The only opinion children have on it at all are the ones they have gained from the media or their parents.

^this is so true. My best friend when I was little was half korean, half italian and I didn't even have a concept of race and that he was "different" from me for a really long time. I didn't even know what his racial background was until I was like 14 because I'd never even thought of it. Kids don't really label and separate people naturally, they're taught to do that.

Don't agree with it, but it's their choice.
