Has anyone read the books by Ally Kennen? I only discovered her this year, when Bullet Boys was released. She writes from the male 1st or 3rd person POV and I didn't realise she was even a female writer (stupidly thought Ally was the same as Ali!). Her characters are brilliant - really troubled teens who you want to punch in the face and hug, all at the same time.
In Bullet Boys (not-too-much-of-a-spoiler alert for next few lines) the main character is a game-keeper's son living up on Dartmoor. He leads a pretty unusual life - trapping foxes and shooting crows, that kind of stuff. The new-boy at his school is Max (who has got some seriously messed up stuff going on ... we're not quite sure what he's done, but they call him the terrorist!) and when they make a deadly discovery up on the moors, they're suddenly running for their lives.
I loved this book, so I went and bought Ally's other books too. Beast is her first novel and it's brilliant. Again, the main character is a really troubled kid in social care with a seriously messed up head. He's got this beast hidden ... but it's all about to go horribly wrong.
I'm just about to start Berserk (just as soon as I can put down BZRK, which incidentally has the same name and an eye on the cover too) which is kind of a follow up to Beast. Can't wait.
