So I read Uglies a few weeks ago and am about half way through Pretties at the moment! I really like them!! I love the characters and the concepts explored. Have any of you guys read them?

Yes! I really liked the trilogy. I just thought the idea behind it was really interesting. In Uglies, we have this consumerist society obsessed with perfection and looks, with everyone brainwashed to act absolutely ridiculous and "dumbed down." Like a lot of dystopian books, it definitely poses the question of whether it's okay to have your independence and individuality taken away, so long as you are happy. You can undoubtedly draw some parallels between our world and theirs.
I liked most of the characters, too.... except for Tally. She really really annoys me, tbh. I loved Zane though! Anyway, it's a great series. Uglies and Pretties end with such cliff hangers! It's been a while since I last read it, but.... either Specials or Pretties was my favorite. I don't really remember ^^;;;

I really liked Uglies and I enjoyed Pretties but after that I thought the series went downhill super fast. It just started to seem so far fetched (I mean more than fantasy futuristic scifi-sh stuff usually does anyway) and I just got kind of disgusted with how.... it felt like Scott Westerfeld was really stretching to push the story forward. I don't know. I thought it just felt really unorganized and badly put together after a while and by Extras I could honestly say I didn't even like ANY of the characters anymore. That being said, I REALLY liked Uglies and Pretties. I just pretend that Specials and Extras don't exist because that ruined it for me.

Extras is a god-awful book. I totally forgot it even existed; that's how bad it was. For me, Uglies is a trilogy.... I don't count Extras as part of the series at all. It literally is what it is - an extra. (albeit one that should not exist) Every single character was irritating and the entire concept of mysterious alien invaders was ridiculous and barely tangent to what I thought Scott Westerfeld's point was.
I didn't think Specials was THAT bad though...

I read Uglies and Pretties years ago before the third one had even come out and I remember liking them at the time, though I don't remember much about them. By the sounds of things they started to go downhill though so I think I'm glad I only read the first two.

Specials definitely wasn't as bad as Extras, but I still really didn't like it. For some reason I really hated David, which made the 3rd one especially hard to read. I don't know why I hated him so much except I felt like he was so utterly boring because he was so... perfect. like he didn't seem to have flaws which made me really annoyed by him.

Yes hoverboards! I would like to hoverboard. I'm still debating whether to read Extras or not

I just... didn't even like any of the characters at that point anymore. I've read the first one mainly because i've read other Scott Westerfeld novels ( midnighters anyone ? ) ^I remember feeling like the midnighters needed more books in that series.

uuuhhh. Well it's about a new character mostly (Aya) but Tally and Shay show up. But it's not really about them. It's just really weird.

Yeah, it has an entirely different set of characters, and it's set in Japan. Tally/Shay/David show up for the last couple of pages, and they're pretty much legends. But it's definitely not about them.
I just really got annoyed by everyone in Extras because of their obsession with popularity. I know there's this obsession with beauty and being a "pretty" in the Uglies trilogy, but it didn't irk me as much as Extras did for some reason. Maybe because the Uglies trilogy had a compelling plot and in Extras... you basically have no idea what the point/plot is until you're halfway through the book, at which point you want to chuck the book at the wall in frustration. It's like... "I read through a hundred pages for THIS!?"

It was upsetting, but I suppose that proves that it was written well enough to upset me.... in a good way, not in a "What the f*ck is this?!" way.... which is pretty much my exact reaction to Breaking Dawn when I read that (because what else can anyone say about a human/vampire baby hybrid that a full grown teenage werewolf is in love with... that was definitely a What the F*CK is this?! moment)
